READ ABOUT FREE PRESCHOOL FOR CHILDREN

WHO ARE 4 YEARS OLD BY SEPTEMBER 1.

(Also known as Florida VPK. Read more here AND at the end of this page.)

It's easy. It's FREE for ALL regardless of income. Military dependents are eligible, too.

St. Paul Preschool offers the Florida Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program (VPK). This is a FREE, voluntary state subsidized program for all children who turn four on or by September 1. To participate your child must be registered and tracked by the State of Florida. Parents must supply birth certificates and proof of residency to Child Care Services (107 Tupelo Ave., Fort Walton Beach, Florida, phone: 850-833-9330) for all participating students. VPK students must attend class for 540 hours to be eligible.

You may read additional information and apply for the VPK program at

https://spe.schoolreadiness.org/pe/spe_main.asp. After you complete this on-line application for VPK, you will be required to meet with a representative of the early learning coalition that serves Okaloosa County. The purpose of this in-person parent consultation is to determine your child's eligibility for VPK. Completion of this application is only the first step toward enrollment.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: THE EARLY LEARNING COALITION OF OKALOOSA COUNTY STARTS PROCESSING FLORIDA VPK APPLICATIONS IN APRIL FOR THE COMING SCHOOL YEAR.

The gingerbread man visited St. Paul Preschool.
After his visit the children made their own. (A fine motorskills activity.)

St. Paul Preschool ...

...was established in the Fall of 1983 and is an early childhood ministry of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Our educational philosophy is based on the belief that every child is a special gift from God. Each child learns and develops emotionally, intellectually, socially, physically and spiritually at his or her own unique rate and style.

We are a well-established preschool, licensed by the State of Florida (Registration #CO1OK0064), that has an outstanding reputation and a sincere interest in the health and well-being of our students. Class sizes are intentionally small and enable the staff to provide personalized attention.

All of our teachers have degrees and are CPR and first aid certified. We also have a registered nurse on staff.

At A Glance
  • Christ-centered curriculum.
  • Small, personalized class sizes and excellent teacher/child ratio.
  • Comprehensive evaluations and parent conferences.
  • Special music and worship programs.
  • Highly trained and experienced staff.
  • Renovated playground.
  • Field trips and classroom guests.
  • Intense age and developmentally appropriate phonemic awareness materials.

Primary Goals
  • Developing the child's self-concept.
  • Helping and guiding the child so that the joy of discovery and learning may be experienced.
  • Encouraging and assisting the child to make choices and decisions.
  • Helping the child to develop positive relationships with other children and adults.
Curriculum
The classroom environment at St. Paul is planned to be educational and stimulating, with various interest areas such as books, art, music, puzzles, and manipulative toys. The curriculum and methods are developed from current relevant educational principles.

Play is your child's work
Play is an essential part of our program at St. Paul. Many areas of growth and development are enhanced through a child's play and interaction with other children.

Special Activities
A number of special activities occur throughout the year at St. Paul. We celebrate birthdays, holidays, and offer special programs. We also include several field trips to enhance our curriculum. More details about these activities are provided at the start of school.

Health Information
All new students must have a physical exam (Form 3040) and a shot record card (Form 680 or 681) on file. At the time of the examination your physician will provide you with the necessary forms. These forms must be in your child's file at the beginning of school. This is required by state law and carefully monitored. If you child is running a fever or shows any symptoms of illness, please do not send them to school.

 Parents
We want you child to have a wonderful early childhood experience at St. Paul. One of the most effective ways you can help your child to enjoy school is through your interest and involvement in his or her activities. Parents are always welcome to visit our classes and share in the fun. Classroom volunteers are always welcome. We are looking forward to a rewarding year in this first educational step for both you and your child.

  • Are 4 years old on or before September 1, 2013.
Registration for the 2013-2014 school year began April 1, 2013 and is open to students through the last Friday in March 2014.

TWO STEP ENROLLMENT PROCESS
The Parents/guardians must register their child in person at one of the approved VPK locations during specified times.

*Only parents and legal guardians may register a child for VPK. If you are not the child's parent, you must provide guardianship documentation (i.r. Power of Attorney, Court Order, Care & Custody Letter.)

Step 1—Parent/guardian must go to one of the approved VPK locations during VPK walk-in hours to fill out application and present required residency and age verification documentation. (See below for acceptable forms of documentation.) A VPK Specialist will meet with you to review your information, validate your documentation, provide a quick orientation to the VPK program, and answer questions. After the VPK Specialist establishes child's eligibility, you will receive a VPK Certificate of Eligibility. Parent/guardian can also receive a list of all approved VPK providers in the local area, if desired.

**Parents/guardians MUST provide one document from each of the two categories below in order to register their child.

-- PROOF OF CHILD'S DATE OF BIRTH

  • Official birth certificate or record.
  • A shot/immunization record indicating the date of birth signed by a public health officer or licensed practicing physician (FL Blue Shot Record)
  • A valid passport
  • A valid military dependent ID card

-- PROOF OF FLORIDA RESIDENCY

Step 2– Finally, parents/legal guardians must deliver the VPK Certificate of Eligibility (obtained in Step 1) to their chosen approved VPK provider. This will complete the registration process for parents.
